Local Writing & Reading Groups

There are several local writing groups in the area so if you’re interested in getting involved, they are as follows:

• Whitby Library Writer’s Group who meet weekly at Whitby Library, on Windsor Terrace, between 5-7pm on Tuesday evening.
• Whitby Writer’s Group who meet fortnightly on Thursday mornings from 11am to 1pm at La Rosa Tea Room, East Terrace, Whitby.
• Grosmont and Whitby Writer’s Group who meet the 2nd and 4th Monday’s every month from 7-9pm, in The Common Room, at The Archway, Skinner Street, Whitby.
• Whitby Whaler U3A Creative Writing Group for more senior age groups, who meet fortnightly on Wednesday morning 10am to 12 noon at Whitby Rifle Club.

These groups all engage with local writers with varying styles of delivery, but who can advise and offer peer group support on writing projects.

This year, Whitby Writer’s Group will be in situ at La Rosa Tea room between 2pm to 8pm Thu-Sat, and 2pm-4pm Sunday. Guests attending WLF are welcome to call in for tea and a chat.  There will be drinks, cake and offerings available each day,  purchased from the bar/tearoom.  All WWG’s books will be on display to browse and can be purchased if interested.

There will be other opportunities to browse and purchase books from our local author book stall available across the festival dates (venue/times TBC).

It’s the National Year of Reading this year, and what better way to celebrate than joining a reading group.  There are several of these groups locally, or you can start a group of your own, borrowing books through Whitby Library.  Call in for more information and follow Whitby Library on Facebook.  In a bid to promote reading to new audiences and community groups, Whitby Lit Fest has agreed to distribute 1000 free ‘Quick Read’ books, provided by The Reading Agency, across the local area and is pleased to support and promote reading for pleasure.
